Resilience in Enterprise & Industrial Network Engineering

In mission-critical enterprise environments, network reliability is not optional—it is foundational to business operations. A hardware switch failure or severed uplink must never bring facilities to a standstill.

Novand’s network architecture combines high-performance MikroTik RouterOS v7 routing with enterprise Cisco Catalyst distribution switches to achieve high throughput and deterministic failover.

1. Layer 2 Redundancy & Spanning Tree Protection

Physical loop topology is vital for fault tolerance, yet unchecked loops trigger catastrophic broadcast storms.

Protocol Optimization:

  • RSTP (IEEE 802.1w): Provides rapid link state convergence in under 500 milliseconds.
  • MSTP (IEEE 802.1s): Groups multiple VLANs into distinct spanning tree instances to optimize switch CPU overhead.

Hardened Cisco Catalyst Configuration:

! Enable Rapid PVST+ Globally
spanning-tree mode rapid-pvst
spanning-tree portfast bpduguard default

! Access Port Hardening
interface range GigabitEthernet0/1 - 24
 switchport mode access
 switchport access vlan 10
 spanning-tree portfast
 spanning-tree bpduguard enable

Deploying BPDU Guard ensures that if an unauthorized personal switch is patched into an office wall jack, the port instantly transitions into err-disabled state, preserving the integrity of the campus core.

2. Default Gateway Failover with VRRP on MikroTik

Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol (VRRP) allows dual gateway routers to share a single virtual IP address. Upon primary master failure, the backup router assumes active forwarding in under 3 seconds:

# Primary Master Configuration
/interface vrrp
add interface=vlan10-corp name=vrrp-vlan10 priority=200 vrid=10

/ip address
add address=192.168.10.1/24 interface=vlan10-corp
add address=192.168.10.254/24 interface=vrrp-vlan10

# Secondary Backup Configuration
/interface vrrp
add interface=vlan10-corp name=vrrp-vlan10 priority=100 vrid=10

/ip address
add address=192.168.10.2/24 interface=vlan10-corp
add address=192.168.10.254/24 interface=vrrp-vlan10

3. Layer 2 Access Defense Pillars

Over 70% of network anomalies originate behind the perimeter firewall. Three mandatory controls:

  1. DHCP Snooping: Blocks unauthorized rogue DHCP servers by designating uplink ports as trusted.
  2. Dynamic ARP Inspection (DAI): Validates ARP replies against the DHCP snooping binding database, eliminating man-in-the-middle attacks.
  3. Port Security: Restricts switch port connectivity to authorized hardware MAC addresses, mitigating MAC table exhaustion.

4. Novand Verification & Health Monitoring

  • Validate 10G LACP link aggregation with automated failover tests.
  • Verify sub-second VRRP failover using continuous ICMP monitoring streams.
  • Enforce SNMPv3 encrypted telemetry reporting to central observability dashboards.
  • Mandate SSH key-based authentication with Ed25519 cryptography across all network nodes.
